In the computing and video industries, parallel data buses are being replaced by high speed, standardized, serial buses such as PCI Express, Serial-ATA or HDMI. These buses operate at data base exceeding 1Gbit/s and allow easy interconnection between an ever expanding set of subsystems and peripherals. Proprietary, parallel buses are relegated to inner-chip implementations.
In the automotive industry high speed serial buses, such as FlexRay, are emerging, as well.
A key to wide spread acceptance is the adherence to industry standards as defined by e.g. the PCI SIG or the HDMI LLC. Until recently, developing conformance tests for these standards was a complex, time consuming, and expensive process. The same applied for validation, margin test and debugging.
